Princeton in Portugal: Day 1

Day 1 Photo Gallery
Our first day has come and gone! We got off to a slightly slow start when our flight early Sunday morning was delayed. Nevertheless, we quickly rebounded upon landing in Portugal in the early afternoon. We headed from the airport straight to our hotel, on our way passing by the Estádio José Alvalade and Cristo Rei, the Christ Statue of Lisbon. We were informed by our tour guide, Francisco, that his favorite team Sporting Lisbon, had won decisively at the brightly colored stadium yesterday. He also shared with us that the Christ the King statue was inspired by the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janiero after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument. Â
Our hotel, situated on a golf course, also overlooks the scenic view of Costa da Caparica. We had lunch at the hotel before spending the afternoon acclimatizing to our new surroundings, basking in the warm weather around the pool. In the evening, we departed for a practice under the setting sun. The practice was very productive, helping us get some of the travel fatigue and stiffness out of our legs. After practice, we stopped at a restaurant for a buffet dinner before heading back to the hotel to get a good night's sleep before a very busy day tomorrow.
