Ivy Champion Tigers Begin 2017 Season Saturday With Top-10 Showdown On Lake Carnegie
March 22, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Open
KEY LINKS: Live Video l National Poll l Class of 1987 Trophy History l Full Weekly Race Schedule
For head coach Lori Dauphiny and her 10th-ranked Princeton open rowing team, there is no easing into the 2017 season. In fact, that hasn't been the case for years.
After all, there is nothing relaxing about lining up next to Brown.
Princeton, the reigning Ivy League champion, begins its season Saturday at 9 am in the annual Class of 1987 Trophy regatta against fifth-ranked Brown and 20th-ranked Michigan State (though the 1987 Trophy will be between only Princeton and Brown). The Tigers hold an 18-12 lead in the all-time series, though Brown has won each of the last three meetings.
The regatta, which will be part of a full morning on Lake Carnegie, is scheduled to begin at 9 am with a C4 race, and it will run through the 1V8 race at 10:30 am (see the full order of Saturday races below the preview section of the article). The full regatta will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
This will be the third meeting between the two boats on Lake Carnegie over the last year. Brown retained the Class of 1987 Trophy last March by less than three seconds, while Princeton won the rematch — and the Ivy League championship — by 3.5 seconds on its home course last May.
Here is a quick preview of the 2017 Princeton open rowing team.
Opening Thoughts: There haven't been many mornings like the one Princeton spent on its own Lake Carnegie in the middle of last May, but it was one that won't soon be forgotten by any member of this open women's program.
It's also a weekend that can provide great inspiration for the upcoming 2017 season.
Princeton upset No. 1 Brown to win its fourth Ivy League crown in the last six years and followed with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships, and it did so with a fairly balanced lineup throughout its boats. Without question, the Tigers will miss the production from the Class of 2016, which included First-Team All-America honorees Erin Reelick and Meghan Wheeler, but the top two boats had more than their share of underclassmen who continue to improve at an impressive rate.
As for the rising seniors, Dauphiny couldn't say enough about what they have brought to the program — more on that in a bit — but she knows that the team could still face some bumps as it tries to find a new rhythm for the upcoming season.
Here is a quick preview of the 2017 Princeton open women.
Looking Back: A severe weather forecast for the 2016 Ivy League Championships threw the proposed weekend into chaos, first with the venue (moving from Mercer Lake to Lake Carnegie) and then with the race schedule (both the prelims and finals were held in the morning). That would have been enough to be noteworthy, but then the Tigers stunned the top-ranked Brown Bears to win the Ivy League title.
Two weeks later, Princeton returned to the 1V grand final at the NCAA Championships, and the Tigers also placed their 2V in the grand final. The team finished seventh overall to cap a brilliant postseason, and they got an extra month of training time together by qualifying for the Henley Royal Regatta. Both the varsity eight and the second varsity eight were victors at the Women's Royal Henley, and the varsity eight reached the semifinal of the prestigious Remenham Challenge Cup.
The 2017 Captains: Seniors Catherine Babiec and Georgie Howe are co-captains for the 2017 Princeton Tigers. Babiec has rowed in both the 1V and the 2V over the last two years, and she rowed in the 7 seat to help the 2V reach the grand final at the 2016 NCAAs. Howe has been a member of the 1V throughout her career, which has included two Ivy championship performances. She also has significant international experience, as she placed fourth in the Australian W4+ at the U-23 World Championships.
Head Of The Class: As mentioned before, Dauphiny has been very pleased with the leadership and development of the senior class. Injuries have impacted several members of the group, but the determination has been there to consistently fight through, which Dauphiny hopes will serve as an example to the younger rowers. They have also been great leaders out of the water, willing to volunteer where needed to keep things progressing at the boathouse.
Two Big Home Dates: We'll go with the first date of the season, and we'll cheat a bit with the last. Princeton opens the 2017 season against both Brown and Michigan State for the Class of 1987 Trophy. Brown has won this race three straight years, so you know the seniors would love to get this one in their final opportunity.
The NCAA Championship may not be at Lake Carnegie, but it couldn't be much closer. Mercer Lake will serve as host during the championship weekend, which should draw plenty of Princeton supporters. Mercer was the site of the historic 2006 NCAA championship win for Princeton.
Final Thoughts: It's always an interesting early test for Princeton to draw Brown in March, especially knowing that those two are always prime contenders for the Ivy title in May, but the Tigers will have plenty of tests with a challenging road schedule — they row four straight on the road in April, including back-to-back races at Harvard and Yale. With a talented crop of freshmen entering the mix, this team should see a steep development during the heart of its regular season, and then it won't travel a far distance to either the Ivy Championships (Cooper River) or NCAAs.
