LONG BEACH, Calif. – A common occurrence on this West Coast trip, Haley Wan and Ashleigh Johnson helped the Princeton Tigers over the No. 16 Long Beach State 49ers, 7-2, at the Lindgren Aquatics Center on Wednesday evening.
Hours after being named the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) Offensive Player of the Week, Wan scored four times, giving her five consecutive hat tricks and eight straight multi-goal outings. Before getting on a plane to California on Mar. 16, the junior had 17 goals in 11 contests. In the six games out west, Wan has posted 21 tallies.
Johnson, who was selected as CWPA Defensive Player of the Week for the 18th time today, stopped 15 shots. She held the 49ers without a goal for 26 minutes and 38 seconds of game time. Going back to yesterday's game vs. Pomona-Pitzer, Johnson's shutout streak reached 29 minutes and 55 seconds. It's the seventh time this season that the senior has made at least 15 saves.
Wan collected the first two goals for Princeton as it took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. The All-American last season picked up her hat trick in under 11 minutes as her third tally with 5:57 to go in the first half made the score, 4-0. Wan's fourth goal and a tally from Sydney Cheong made the contest, 6-0, after 24 minutes. Kasey Bersh finished the last 1:43 for Ashleigh Johnson, making a save.
Princeton has won five straight games and is 16-1 on the season. The Tigers will take on No. 1 USC tomorrow at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PT). The game will be featured on the Pac-12 Network.
