March 27, 2017 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Chad Powers and Zack Belski were two of 30 student-athletes selected as candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award, Premier Sports Management announced today.
Powers was selected as the 2016 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and was the only unanimous player to be named to the first team All-Ivy League. He was tied for first in the conference in wins (six), second in innings pitched (69.2), second in ERA (2.45) and tied for second in shutouts (one). He was also picked for the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. This season, Powers sports a 2.70 ERA in four starts.
2016 was a breakout season for Belski as he was honored with a first team All-Ivy League. He improved in every offensive category as he set season-highs in runs (19), hits (39), home runs (three), RBI (28), total bases (59), walks (19), on-base percentage (.346) and slugging percentage (.383). The senior led the conference in put outs (386), double plays turned (38) and was fourth in the conference in RBI. The first baseman was also honorable mention All-Ivy as a freshman.
For the last four years, each player has been part of the baseball team's preseason clinics with Team New Jersey, which won the inaugural gold medal at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for Senior CLASS award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 College World Series in June.
