Toth Will Play For All-America Finish Sunday At CSA Championships
March 04, 2017 | Women's Squash
Senior Alexandra Toth knows now she has one match left in her collegiate career, and she also knows what is at stake.
Toth won two matches in the Holleran North draw during Day 2 of the CSA Individual Championships to advance to Sunday's 10:15 am final, where she will face Cornell's Margaux Losty. The winner will claim Second-Team All-America honors. Losty won a tight four-game match over Toth during the regular season, though that match was played in Ithaca.
She will be Princeton's lone competitor in a major draw Sunday, as members of both the men's and women's teams were eliminated during a brutal Saturday session where players were scheduled to play twice.
On the women's side, junior Olivia Fiechter dropped her quarterfinal match in the Ramsay Cup draw to Harvard #2 Kayley Leonard. Fiechter battled back after dropping the first two games with an 11-8 win in the third, but Leonard had too much in the fourth and took the win.
The rest of the women's side was eliminated in their Holleran Cup draws. Senior Gabriella Garr, sophomore Samantha Chai and freshman Morgan Steelman each picked up wins to open their Saturdays, but each of the three fell in tough semifinal contests.
There were plenty of dramatic matches on the men's side, but none were able to make it through the Saturday gauntlet. Freshman Adhitya Raghavan pushed Trinity #2 Rick Penders to the brink in his showdown for First-Team All-America honors with a pair of 11-9 wins, but Penders claimed the fifth game to assure a Top-10 finish.
Classmates Gabriel Morgan and Shehab Thabet both were morning winners on Saturday. Morgan won a five-game marathon to reach his semifinal, where he pushed Jamie Oakley of George Washington to another fifth-game conclusion. Ultimately, the day caught up with him, and Oakley took the fifth game 11-9. Thabet had a stirring five-game win over Trinity's Tom DeMulder, but he was knocked out by Ricardo Lopez of Rochester in the semifinal.
