Record Broken! Harner Invite Gives Princeton An Ivy-Best 7 NCAA Wrestling Qualifiers
March 07, 2017 | Wrestling
It seems like forever ago when Princeton wrestling set a program record by qualifying six competitors to the NCAA Championships.
And by forever, we mean Sunday.
After six Princeton wrestlers earned automatic berths to the 2017 NCAA Championships during a historic performance at the EIWA Championships, reigning All-American Brett Harner received one of six at-large berths to the 197-pound weight class, it was announced Tuesday by the NCAA committee. Harner, who placed eighth at the 2016 Championships to become the ninth Tiger wrestler to earn All-America honors, will join classmates Jordan Laster and Ray O'Donnell, as well as Pat D'Arcy, Mike D'Angelo, Matthew Kolodzik and Jonathan Schleifer, in St. Louis next week for the national championships.
The full brackets will be announced Wednesday night at 6 pm on NCAA.com.
Princeton leads the Ivy League with seven NCAA qualifiers, and it ties Lehigh for the most in the EIWA. The Tigers finished third at the EIWA Championships — its best finish since 1978 — and both Kolodzik (141) and Laster (149) won individual championships. That marked the third time in more than 75 years (1978, 1984) that Princeton won multiple EIWA individual titles.
