Softball Team Finishes Weekend Sweep, Takes Two From Yale
April 02, 2017 | Softball
For the first time in nine seasons, Princeton is unbeaten in the Ivy League after the first weekend, and also for the first time in nine seasons, the Tigers took all four from Brown and Yale.
Princeton's 9-1 and 2-0 wins over Yale allowed those first-since-2008 superlatives as a four-run first inning spurred the Tigers in the opener and a second shutout in as many days for senior Erica Nori in the circle fueled Princeton in the nightcap.
Princeton and Columbia were the only teams to push through the Ivy's first weekend perfect, as the Lions took four from Dartmouth and Harvard in New York. The Crimson and the Big Green are up next for the Tigers beginning Friday at Harvard.
In Sunday's opener at '95 Field, Princeton reached the first five batters in the bottom of the first, getting run-scoring hits from Mikayla Blaska, Allison Harvey, Marissa Reynolds and Kaylee Grant to get a 4-1 lead after a Francesca Casalino home run for Yale in the top of the first.
A Harvey sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-1 in the second, and an Alex Viscusi three-run home run in the third made it 8-1. Reynolds tripled home Harvey in the fourth to bring the eight-run rule into play, and once Claire Klausner ended the game by retiring the last six Bulldogs she faced, the Tigers had their win.
Klausner struck out five, giving up just two hits and a walk.
In the nightcap, Nori also gave up just two hits and a walk, letting no Bulldog past second base. Princeton, meanwhile, loaded the bases against Casalino in the second before leaving the sacks full and had a two-out single from Harvey in the third before breaking through in the fourth. Grant led off that inning with a walk before Keeley Walsh drove her home with a double for the game's first run, and in the fifth, a one-out double from Harvey put her on for a Grant run-scoring single and a 2-0 lead.
On the weekend, Grant finished 5 for 7 at the plate with five RBI and three doubles to slug 1.143, adding three walks for an on-base percentage of .800. Nori's shutout was her second of the weekend as she tossed 12 innings to get two wins.
Nori and Klausner held Brown and Yale to a combined .145 average while the Tigers outhit the two teams with a .364 clip. Grant, Harvey (6 for 9, .667), Kylee Pierce (3 for 5, .600) and Reynolds (.545, 6 for 11) all hit better than .500 on the weekend. Reynolds had two doubles, a triple and a home run for a 1.182 slugging percentage over the four games.
