Ivy Champion Football Team Names 2017 Captains

When Princeton hits Powers Field this fall and attempts another Ivy League championship run, it will be led by one of its most accomplished trio of captains in program history. Reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year John Lovett and 2016 Defensive Player of the Year finalist Kurt Holuba will join All-Ivy quarterback and 2016 captain Chad Kanoff as the 2017 Princeton Football tri-captains.
Holuba, the finalist for Defensive Player of the Year honors, started on the defensive line and led the Ivy League with 7.0 sacks in conference play. The Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after a three-sack performance against Harvard, he recorded at least a half sack in five of the last six games, and he recorded 34 tackles on the defensive line.
Kanoff will be a tri-captain for the second straight season. He made his debut on the All-Ivy team after moving to fifth on the all-time Princeton passing list with 4,036 yards during the 2016 Ivy championship season. He completed over 69% of his passes in four of the six Ivy League wins, and he was named the GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week after going 21 for 25 for 230 yards and three touchdowns in the Ivy-opening win over Columbia.
Lovett earned first-team All-America honors and was named the 2016 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year. He did more than just lead the FCS in rushing touchdowns (20) this season; Lovett also threw 10 touchdowns and caught one, meaning he accounted for 31 touchdowns last season. Five other Ivy League teams scored 30 touchdowns or fewer. He accounted for a Princeton-record seven touchdowns in the win at Cornell, and he accounted for at least two touchdowns in every Ivy League game this season.
Princeton opens its 2017 season Saturday, Sept. 16, at home against the University of San Diego.
