Lightweights Win Thriller Over Penn To Retain Wood-Hammond; H-Y-P Showdown Looms
April 22, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Both the Princeton and Penn men's lightweight rowing teams showed just how tight the entire field is last weekend, as both put major charges into narrow losses to No. 1 Cornell and No. 2 Yale. Naturally, it would be a close showdown between these two as well Saturday morning on the Schuylkill, but the Tigers got right back on the winning side by holding off the Quakers for their 60th Wood-Hammond Trophy, as well as their 38th in the last 39 years.
Princeton, which nearly upset the top-ranked Big Red last weekend, was able to get out to an early lead over the Quakers on the Schuylkill, but Penn had a late charge ready on its home course. A veteran Tiger eight had enough power over the final stretch to hold off the charge and win by 1.4 seconds (5:37.1 - 5:38.5).
"We expected a very tough race for the Wood Hammond Trophy and that's exactly what we got," head coach Marty Crotty said. "We worked very hard this week on staying connected in the third 500, an area where we failed mightily last week against Cornell. The work paid off—we were able to establish a more commanding lead against Penn, who found themselves in a real battle with Georgetown coming into the last six or seven hundred. Despite Penn's pretty impressive sprint our guys maintained control this week and we got out of Philly with our shirts. Penn will definitely be yet another crew to contend with at Sprints and IRAs but their competition provided just the test we needed to stay sharp heading into a big HYP weekend."
That completed a perfect morning for the Tigers, who won all four varsity eight races, as well as a 5V4 to open the morning. The 2V built off its win over Cornell last weekend with a nearly five-second win over the Quakers to move to 6-1 on the second, while the 3V and 4V both had strong weekends.
"I was happy to see us execute our race plans in every event, including having a good idea about how to navigate the Schuylkill River race course," Crotty said. "Its famous 'dogleg right' can be very tricky. We got a good run over the course on Tuesday night so we came prepared and I'm glad it paid off."
The Tigers can now turn their focus on the Goldthwait & Vogel Cups regatta, better known as H-Y-P weekend. The stakes couldn't be much higher, as the three teams make up the majority of the Top 4 in the latest USRowing Coaches Poll. Yale is No. 2, right behind Cornell, while third-ranked Princeton and fourth-ranked Harvard would like nothing more than to grab that position heading into Eastern Sprints.
