Princeton Scores 4-2 Road Victory Over No. 22 St. John's
April 26, 2017 | Baseball
Jamaica, N.Y. – Behind a stellar performance from Andrew Gnazzo and a two-run home run from Asher Lee-Tyson, the Princeton Tigers took down the No. 22 St. John's Red Storm, 4-2, at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Gnazzo went five innings, the longest outing of his season. He struck out three hitters and scattered four hits in scoring his first career victory. Paul Tupper had a team-best three hits while Alex Dickinson and Lee-Tyson had multi-hit games. Conor Nolan pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits, punching out three hitters, earning his first career save.
Princeton's offense amassed a crooked number in the second inning. After a groundout to start the frame, Paul Tupper and Joseph Flynn, singled. Two batters later, they advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before coming around to touch home on a single from David Harding. The next hitter, Lee-Tyson, launched a home run over the left field fence that put Princeton in front, 4-0.
The Tigers looked to add on in the third with runners on the corners and two out, but a strikeout wrapped up the frame. St. John's had its first runner reach scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but a groundout retired the side.
St. John's finally broke through in the fourth stanza behind three straight hits including a RBI double from Gui Gingras. A fielding error added the Red Storm's second run.
The home team had back-to-back walks in the fifth, but Gnazzo finished off his outing with a groundout. The Red Storm put together another threat in the bottom of the seventh. Robbie Knightes ripped a fly ball to center field, but it was dropped. Danny Baer hit his cut-off man, Lee-Tyson, who riffled a throw to third base, throwing out Knightes.
Princeton looked to tack on to their lead as two straight errors and a single loaded the bases with no out in the top of the eighth inning, but two strikeouts and a fielders' choice left the runners stranded. The Tigers had the first two batters reach base in the ninth, but a double play and strikeout completed the at-bat.
The Red Storm brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Nolan polished off his first career save with a groundout.
The 2017 regular season comes to an end with a four-game set vs. the Cornell Big Red, beginning on Friday. First pitch at Clarke Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
