The fourth-ranked Princeton women's lightweight rowing team will take aim at its seventh Eastern Sprints title — and first since 2011 — Sunday afternoon on Lake Quinsigamond. After a considerable rebuilding effort in 2016, junior Emily Schneider and her teammates know they belong among the list of top contenders this weekend.
"I can't begin to describe how different this year feels from last; we are so excited to see what we can accomplish this weekend," she said. "This week of practice has already been one of the best we've had, building off the solid foundation we laid early in the season. We've developed so much over the course of this spring, both within each of our three boats and with the team as a whole, and the ultimate reward is to see that progress in action at a championship regatta."
The Tigers had their sights on a two-weekend sweep through Massachusetts to close April, but they would be happy to settle for a golden finish this Sunday. Princeton fell short against Radcliffe in the Class of 1999 regatta last weekend, although they learned plenty about themselves during a very close 2,000 meters on the Charles River. Radcliffe was able to get an early lead, but Princeton kept contact throughout the race and pushed back on the Crimson at different points. Radcliffe never let the lead drop below two seats and held on to its advantage long enough to retain the Cup.
"You'd always like to see the margin flipped, but I think our race against Radcliffe was a learning opportunity for us," Schneider said. "We came out of it knowing what we needed to focus on improving this week. Having a clear, defined goal going into a championship week is a really important way to target the effort you put in. Coming off of last weekend, we've got the drive to motivate that kind of directed effort.
"I feel that our boat has become even stronger as a unit over the last few weeks," Schneider said. "We've grown in our ability to lock in with an aggressive racing mentality, but also stick to a relentless rhythm and internal focus. It's been exciting to see ourselves hone in and keep building with each practice."
Sunday's full Sprints regatta will be streamed live on YouTube by USRowing.
