Harvard Takes Goldthwait Cup; Lightweights Eye Sprints Rematch
April 29, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
In two weeks, the Princeton men's lightweight rowing team will return to Massachusetts, and the Tigers know they will need to bring a bit more speed to make a memorable run at Eastern Sprints.
The Tigers will likely be the fourth seed at Sprints after falling to both Harvard and Yale during Saturday's Goldthwait Cup showdown on the Charles River. The Crimson won their 45th Goldthwait Cup — the most for any team in the historic rivalry — and it also won the Vogel Cup for the team points competition.
While the Tigers will likely be behind Harvard, Yale and Cornell in the Sprints seeding poll, they will also know they were right there with all three boats in road competitions. They led Cornell on the Cayuga for more than 1500 meters before falling just short of a Platt Cup win, and they just couldn't quite make up an early deficit Saturday morning on the Charles.
Both boats were able to grab some early seats on Princeton over the first 500 meters, though the Tigers never lost contact with either. Though Princeton made various pushes at the leading duo, it couldn't get into the final sprint, which Harvard won by less than two seconds over the top-ranked Bulldogs.
Princeton experienced tight racing throughout the morning. The Tiger 2V fell to Harvard by less than three seconds, and the 3V fell to Yale by less than one second. The 4V had the narrowest margin of all, falling to the host Crimson by less than a .1 of a second.
Princeton will be off this coming week, and then it will head to Lake Quinsigamond the following week to compete at Eastern Sprints. A bronze medalist last year, the Tigers will be seeking their first gold since 2010.
