No. 9 Tigers Collect Close 8-7 Victory Over No. 15 Hartwick, Advance To CWPA Championship Game

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Princeton Tigers advanced to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship game with an 8-7 victory over the No. 15 Hartwick College Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
Lindsey Kelleher continued her stellar play with a team-high three points (one goal, two assists) while Chelsea Johnson, Sydney Cheong and Eliza Britt had two goals each. Ashleigh Johnson stopped seven shots and collected four steals.
Morgan Hallock began the scoring as she put Princeton in front just 1:31 into the game. After the two teams exchanged goals, Hartwick's Nikolina Mihaljlovik whipped the ball into the back of the net with three seconds remaining in the first quarter to set the score at 2-all.
The Tigers went on a three-goal spurt in the second quarter before Hartwick got one back with 22 seconds to go, making the CWPA matchup, 5-3, at halftime.
After Hartwick cuts its deficit to one (5-4), Cheong and Britt put the Tigers back in front by three. For the second time, Mihaljlovik registered a goal with under 20 seconds to go as the two top-15 nationally ranked teams played to a 7-5 score after three frames.
A man-up goal from Lena Kotanchyan got the Hawks within one goal (7-6) at the 5:31 mark of the fourth quarter. It took Chelsea Johnson just 21 seconds to respond as she scored a man-up tally to keep Hartwick at bay. Hartwick made one more push, tallying with 3:23 to go, but was held off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
With the victory, Princeton will take on the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The Tigers will look for its fifth CWPA crown in program history (2000, 2012-13, 2015). The Wolverines took down the Tigers, 14-6, earlier this month.
