Fourth-Ranked Tiger Lights Top Delaware, Dartmouth
April 08, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Coming off its biggest win of the young season, the fourth-ranked Princeton lightweight men wanted to make sure they built off the energy of last weekend's Columbia win. The Tigers accomplished that feat and put themselves in good position as they begin the road portion of their season with the No. 1 team in the country.
Princeton moved to 4-1 on the season Saturday morning with strong victories over both Dartmouth and Delaware in their home finale. The Tigers, coming off their win over reigning IRA champion Columbia last weekend, took the win in 6:22.5, more than nine seconds faster than Dartmouth. The Big Green, however, hit some trouble with about 400 meters remaining in the race, so that accounted for part of the margin during challenging conditions on Lake Carnegie.
"The conditions were definitely tough," sophomore Danny Hogan said. "Our resident meteorologist and coach, Marty Crotty, let us know that pretty early in the week, so we knew going into this race the conditions would be similar to that created by a NutriNinja Blender: swirly, savage and relatively unpredictable. It led Dartmouth's steering piece [the rudder that keeps them straight] to malfunction near the finish line causing them to end up in Delaware's lane. Fortunately no men or women were lost, but made for an interesting last 100 meters.
"Our coxswain Shea Minter did a great job steering a clean course and we took advantage of points where the water was as smooth Ricky Swanton's sweet rhythm," Hogan added. "Although it may not be the most fun, racing in these types of wacky conditions really help to allow a crew to gain experience and continue to flower."
Delaware earned a win by just under six seconds in the 2V race, while Princeton had a win by more than six seconds in the 3V. Princeton also earned wins over Delaware in both the 4V and 5V races.
The Tigers will spend the final three weeks of the regular season on the road, a stretch that begins next weekend on the Cayuga Inlet against No. 1 Cornell during the annual Platt Cup regatta. Princeton ended an 18-race win streak for the Big Red last season on Lake Carnegie and won the Platt Cup for the first time since 2011 with a win of nearly four seconds over the Big Red.
"Road trips always add another wrench to the tool box and having to leave the awesome facilities we have at home makes everything a bit tougher," Hogan said. "But I really believe that strong teams and good crews are made on road trips like the ones coming up. We eat, sleep, travel and row together and lose the distractions of campus life so we can really focus on one of the most important things in our lives: athletics.
"Racing a team like Cornell is always a great mid-season test," he added. "They are a talented crew with lots of power and ability, and a fun crew to race. These next few weeks offer some great opportunities to challenge ourselves and continue to sharpen the edge of our blades on Martin M. Crotty's Craftsman Silicone Carbide Grinding Wheel."
