Men's Lightweights Ready For Midseason Showdown With Top-Ranked Cornell

Mid-terms on campus may have taken place a month ago, but the Princeton men's lightweight squad will face its own version of a mid-term this weekend.
The Tigers, heading away from Lake Carnegie for the first time this season, will travel to the Cayuga Inlet Saturday morning to take on top-ranked Cornell for the Platt Cup.
"This is the first away race of the season, so it will be a great test to see how we handle travel and the loss of the home course advantage," sophomore Ricky Swanton said. "I have not raced in Ithaca, so it will be a physical and mental test with the loss of the home course advantage.
"I am really excited to see how we stack up with the top-ranked crew now, so that we will have the next weeks before the championships to iron out any variables," he added. "I see this as a perfect benchmark for the season."
Princeton has made significant strides since its season-opening loss to Navy. Beginning with the Fosburgh Cup victory over Georgetown, Princeton has won four straight, including the Campbell Cup win over reigning IRA champion Georgetown.
"I think that the boat has begun its stride in speed and technical development, with us searching for the extra one percent every practice," Swanton said. "Against Dartmouth and Delaware we were able to fall into a more dynamic rhythm that has set us up well to build off of this week. We still have some things to work on but I am excited to test our speed this weekend."
The Tigers will certainly get that test against a Cornell team that won't take Princeton for granted. After all, the Big Red came to Lake Carnegie last year riding an 18-race win streak, only to see it end with a loss by nearly four seconds. That victory began a second-half surge for the Tigers, who went on to medal at both Sprints and IRAs.
Princeton would love to see a similar result this weekend — and beyond — but they understand the challenges of winning on the Cayuga. Though the Tigers hold a 36-16 all-time advantage over Cornell in the Platt Cup series, the Big Red have won six of the last eight at home, including each of the last two.
This race is the first of two against top-three programs to conclude the season, and each will be on the road. Following the Wood-Hammond Cup races next weekend, the Tigers will head to the Charles River April 29 to take on both No. 2 Yale and No. 3 Harvard for the Vogel and Goldthwait Cups.
