Princeton Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals in an Epic 11-9 Win Over Cornell

It will hands down be one of the most talked about Princeton athletic events of the year, maybe one of the best on Sherrerd Field to date. There was the rivalry, a tight game, an enormous crowd, torrential rain and a lightning delay. It will be remembered as the day Princeton defeated Cornell 11-9 in the NCAA second round game, beating the Big Red for the third time in four weeks.
A tied game with less than five minutes remaining before sophomore Elizabeth George scored two of her four goals to regain the lead for the Tigers. The go-ahead goal was scored after Olivia Hompe won the draw control, sent a long pass to George who had a good step on the other players on the field, and beat Renee Poullott one-on-one at 4:04 just as the rain started to pour down.
Senior Ellie DeGarmo one of her 15 saves on the afternoon after Cornell took possession off the next draw. The Tigers raced down the field with Kathryn Hallett finding George for the back door goal as Princeton took an 11-9 lead with 2:08 remaining.
A lightning delay halted action just after the next draw was taken by Cornell. The rain quickly passed though it felt like an eternity for the two teams to come back out onto the field to finish of the 2:08 of the two-goal game.
Senior Madeline Rodriguez picked off a Cornell pass with 1:18 to play and took the ball down the other end. The Tigers were given a free-position attempt but had no reason to take the shot, instead pulling it back out but a tough pass ended up in the stick of the Big Red with 44 seconds left. Dickson was able to draw a free-position attempt with 22 seconds left but DeGarmo denied her on the shot as the ball flew out bounds. With Cornell backing up, they had just 17 seconds to make something happen. The Princeton defense pressured and Cornell couldn't find an opening as the Tigers stormed the field with an 11-9 win.
Cornell opened the game with two quick goals in the first 2:42 but Princeton's response came fast and furious as it rattled off five goals to take a 5-2 lead at 14:31. Five different players had goals with freshman Tess D'Orsi scoring the first goal and assisting on the second. Hallett and George tallied unassisted markers before Ellie McNulty buried a free-position attempt at 14:31.

Taylor Reed ended the nearly 22-minute Cornell scoring drought with the final strike of the first half as The Tigers held a two-goal lead at the half. DeGarmo had an excellent first half, making four saves including one in the final second. She also picked off a pass 10 minutes into the game.

Hompe scored her 72nd goal of the season on a feed from junior Colby Chanenchuk at 24:18. Amie Dickson who was denied in a goal in the Ivy League Tournament championship game converted on a free-position attempt two minutes later.

DeGarmo was at it again, stopping an 8-meter shot by Farinholt at 21:27 before George added her second of the game, a man-down goal, after a yellow card was assessed to Rodriguez. The Big Red were able to convert on the extra man with one second left as Dickson dished off to Sarah Phillips.

Senior Anna Doherty notched two straight goals both on feeds from Hompe less than two minutes apart as Princeton regained a three-goal lead 9-6 at 16:24.

A three-goal by the Big Red and a 12-minute scoring drought by the Tigers evened the game 9-9 with 4:27 remaining. Farinholt scored twice, including one from the eight-meter, while Reed had one in between.
George's four goals match a career high, as she tallied four against Penn in the Ivy League semifinal last week. Hompe had two goals and two assists, while D'Orsi and Hallett had a goal and an assist. With her 15 saves today, DeGarmo has the single-season record with 219, surpassing Katrina Sorenson's 209 from the 1983 season. Another single-season record came from Chanenchuk as her two assists today gives her a single-season record of 37, two more than Jenny Bristow's record from 1994.
Farinholt had a hat trick for the Big Red, while Dickson tallied two goals and one assist. Reed scored twice while Ellis had a goal and a helper. Poulott finished the game with eight saves.
Cornell outshot Princeton 30-27, while the Tigers had more shots on frame 29-24. Cornell had a 12-11 edge in draws, while Princeton won five more ground balls 17-12.
The Tigers, now 15-3 on the season, advance to the NCAA Quarterfinal round for the second time in three years, where they will have a rematch with Penn State. That game is scheduled for Sunday, May 21 in University Park. Game time has yet to be determined.
