A day after battling the nation's fourth-ranked team to within three runs, the Princeton softball team saw its 2017 season come to an end with an 10-2, six-inning loss to Jacksonville State on Florida State's home field Saturday afternoon before 1,153 fans.
The Gamecocks, champions of the Ohio Valley Conference, scored in each of the first three innings and pitcher Whitney Gillespie limited Princeton to just a Kaitlyn Waslawski hit and two walks over the first four frames. Princeton's bats started to get clicking in the later innings, starting with a Mikayla Blaska base hit in the fifth. An Allison Harvey single and an error put two on in the sixth for Keeley Walsh, who lined a base hit to right to pick up both for Princeton's runs. Marissa Reynolds tied the program's career walks record with her 88th free pass in the second inning.
JSU used a pair of walks and a Stephanie Lewis single to score a run in the bottom of the first and then doubled the lead the next inning on a walk and an Emily Woodruff double as Claire Klausner relieved starter Erica Nori during that frame to leave the bases loaded.
The Gamecocks opened it up in the third with a Woodruff double scoring one before Anna Chisolm added a two-run single to make it 5-0. Jamie McGuire hit solo home runs in the fourth and the sixth, and JSU used three singles, a walk and a wild pitch to make it a four-run sixth and end the afternoon.
Jacksonville State won the chance to face Georgia in Saturday's final game with the winner needing to beat Florida State twice Sunday in order to advance to next weekend's Super Regionals.
