Walton Improves in Second Round at NCAA Championships
May 21, 2017 | Women's Golf
Trimming 10 shots off her first-round score, Princeton freshman Maya Walton carded a 6-over 78 Sunday to stand at +22 heading into Monday's final round at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
In Friday's round, Walton got better as the day went on, making par on just one of the first eight holes before doing so on eight of the last 10. Following Saturday's weather cancellation, Walton again improved over the course of her round Sunday. After a double bogey on her round-opening 10th hole, Walton did no worse than bogey on the 17 remaining holes and made par on three of the next seven after that opening double. Walton picked up her first birdie of the weekend on the 18th hole at the turn before making par or better on six of the last nine holes including birdies on seven and nine to close the day.
Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho, who joined Walton as one of the three players to qualify as an individual out of the NCAA Athens Regional leads the field at even par with Purdue's August Kim a shot behind at +1.
Monday's final round will not only determine the individual champ but also the eight teams in the field of 24 that will move on to the match-play quarterfinals that will crown the team champion. Walton will tee off from the 10th hole at 8:40 a.m. ET/7:40 local time.
