Walton Set to Compete at NCAA Championships
May 16, 2017 | Women's Golf
Last week, Princeton freshman Maya Walton became the third golfer in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships, and beginning Friday, she'll take that opportunity at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., just west of Chicago.
Kelly Shon '14 and Mary Moan '97 are the only other Princeton golfers to compete at the NCAA finals. Walton earned the bid by getting the last individual spot as the third-highest finisher not on an advancing team out of the NCAA Athens Regional in Georgia. Walton finished tied for fifth in the 96-player field at -2, three shots clear of the next-highest player not on an advancing team. A second-team All-Ivy League honoree after finishing seventh at the Ivy League Championships in Florida the last weekend of April, Walton turned in her two lowest rounds of the season in the last two rounds of the NCAA regional with a 70 and a 69.
Now, the field grows to 132 players between the 24 teams that won their way to Illinois and the 11 other individuals who did so as well. All players will play a single round Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the top 15 teams and nine players not on those teams will get the chance to compete for one more round Monday. The event will continue for two days beyond that with the top eight teams in a match-play format to decide the team champion, while the individual standings will be set following the fourth round Monday.
Walton will tee off at 8:25 a.m. CT/9:25 ET Friday for her first round before going at 12:55 p.m. CT/1:55 ET Saturday for the second round. The tee time Sunday will be at one of those two times, with the top six individuals going in the earlier slot and the next six at the later time. The course will be a par 72 and measure 6,261 or 6,343 yards for the event.
The Golf Channel will provide four hours of coverage during Monday's play, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. CT (4-8 p.m. ET), and live scoring via Golfstat is available here.
