Ysabel Liu '30 Wins New Jersey Amateur Championship

Incoming first-year women's golfer Ysabel Liu '30 bested all competitors at the 101st New Jersey Women's Amateur, claiming the championship and a berth into the U.S. Women's Amateur to be held August 4-9 at The Honors Course in in Ooltewah, Tenn.
Liu will be making her second start at a U.S. Women's Amateur after qualifying for the 2025 championship.
Liu defeated Vanderbilt rising junior Angelina Tolentino, 2 Up, in the Championship Match to win the event which was held at Essex Fells Country Club. Liu led for most of the front nine before Tolentino tied the match on the eighth hole. Tolentino would go on to take a 1 Up lead after a birdie on the 11th hole and again regained a 1 Up lead following a birdie on the 14th hole.
Trailing by one with three holes to play, Liu parred the par-5 16th while Tolentino bogeyed to bring the match to All Square with two holes to play. Liu would take the lead on the par-4 17th with a birdie, and a four on the par-4 finishing hole was enough to clinch the victory after Tolentino mustered only a bogey.
Liu reached the final after a convincing 6&5 win in the semifinals on July 14 over Northwestern rising junior Megan Meng. After falling behind following a loss of the first hole, Liu quickly answered by winning the second hole to get back to All Square. After a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole gave Liu a 1 Up lead, she would win four of the next six holes to take a 5 Up lead through 10 holes. She would salt away the win with a par of the par-4 13th hole that bested Meng's bogey and provided the final 6&5 margin.
That win in the semis followed a comeback win in the quarterfinals earlier on July 14. Liu never led Anushka Sawant, a rising junior at Delaware, until the 15th hole, trailing by as many as two hole with six to play. Liu would even the match on the 14th hole with a birdie 3, then take the lead with a four on the par-5 15th hole. Leading by one with two holes to play, Liu completed the comeback with a birdie 3 on the 17th hole to secure the 2&1 victory.
Match Play opened for Liu on July 13 with a 6&4 win over Brooke Oberparleiter, a rising senior at Kentucky. Liu won the first three holes played before back-to-back birdies closed out the match.
Liu earned her spot in Match Play by finishing third in the stroke play portion with a 71 (-2) on July 12 to secure one of 16 spots in Match Play out of the 46 competitors in the field.
