Jadwin Gym Set To Host 2017 NWCA All-Star Classic
May 22, 2017 | Wrestling
Princeton University will host its first NWCA All-Star Classic in Jadwin Gym this November 5, 2017, a date when several of the nation's top-ranked wrestlers will kick off their seasons.
"Jadwin Gym is arguably the most historic wrestling venue in the state of New Jersey, having hosted two NCAA Championships as well as the home of the state wrestling tournament for 20 years," said Chris Ayres, the reigning EIWA Co-Coach of the Year and a two-time Ivy League Coach of the Year. "Unfortunately, for about 10 years prior to my arrival at Princeton, there was not a single wrestling event in the venue, so when I arrived I had two goals: get wrestling events in Jadwin and fill Jadwin for one of them. We met the first goal by having two conference championships and multiple dual meets, and now that we are hosting the All-Star Classic, I think the second goal can be achieved on November 5. New Jersey and the surrounding region is one of the best wrestling areas in the country, and I truly believe that we can sell it out."
The selection of participants for the event will begin this October.
Five Princeton wrestlers have competed in the main portion of the All-Star Classic, including Brett Harner last fall. Chris Perez (2014) and Jordan Laster (2015) both recently competed in the preliminary matches at the event.
During Ayres' time at Princeton, Jadwin Gym has hosted both the 2012 and 2016 EIWA Championships, as well as a pair of dual matches against Rutgers — one of which served to honor all former New Jersey state champions.
