Tigers Take Third at Ivy Heps Behind WIns from Bird and 4x800

Team Scores: Harvard 164, Penn 125, Princeton 103, Columbia 97, Dartmouth 60, Cornell 59.5, Brown 44.5, Yale 29.
Princeton finished third at the 2017 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, earning 103 points. The Tigers had wins today from senior Lizzie Bird in the steeplechase, as well as the 4x800 relay. Surprise scorers and student-athletes bringing in points in multiple events both emphasized the success.
Senior Lizzie Bird won her second steeplechase title, as she has scored in the steeple all four years – her worst finish being fourth as a freshman. Today she held the lead from the third lap through the finish taking the win in a time of 10:14.24. Sophomore Allie Klimkiewicz nabbed two points with a fifth-place finish of 10:34.32. Classmate Brighie Leach was one place out of scoring position as she placed seventh at 10:52.91.
After scoring in the hammer throw yesterday, junior Kennedy O'Dell earned points again in both the shot put and the discus. This is the second consecutive year that O'Dell has earned points in all three throwing events. She launched a PR of 13.98 (45-10.5) in the shot put to take fourth. O'Dell also reached 13.38, 13.17, 13.88, 13.95 and 13.72. O'Dell wasn't finished as she hit another PR in the discus, a 44.42 (146-1) to finish in fifth place. In all, O'Dell earned the Tigers 10 points across the three events.
Sophomore Kerri Davidson matched her personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 12.24 (40-2) to finish in fifth place. She also reached 11.68 and 11.98. Sophomore Nnenna Ibe just missed scoring in her first Heps triple jump. She leapt to 11.74 (38-6.25) to finish eighth.
The 4x100 relay followed Bird on the track and with its best time of the season, running 46.76 to took third. Freshman Heide Baron, freshman Ashley Willingham, sophomore Ellie Randolph and senior Christina Walter made up the relay.
Walter qualified for both the 100 and 200 finals today. She clocked a PR of 24.25 in the 200 and a wind-aided 11.86 in the 100.
Senior Elisa Steele and Willingham combined for seven points in the 400 as both ran their personal bests. Steele was third as she ran her first sub-55 second 400, clocking 54.77. Willingham was sixth with a 55.41.
In the 800, both sophomores Jackie Berardo and Anna Jurew scored to bring 12 more points towards the team total. Berardo was the runner-up with a PR of 2:08.13 while Jurew ran a PR of 2:08.70, nearly two full seconds faster than her previous best, for fourth place.
After running a PR to qualify for the final of the 400 hurdles, freshman Devon Block-Funkhouser ran 1:01.70 to take sixth and score for her team.
In her first 5k of the season, sophomore Gaby Forrest earned four points for her team as she placed fourth at 16:39.20. She was in 14th at 1800 meters before she slowly started to tick runners off. By 3400 meters she was in ninth place and three laps later moved into seventh. On the bell lap she pushed past three others to claim her fourth-place position. Senior Alexandra Markovich was one place out of scoring in seventh place with a 16:46.10.
A week after winning the Penn Relays 4x800 champion, the relay repeated as they claimed first place with an 8:42.53. Utilizing a slightly different lineup, the Tigers led off with Bird, followed by Jurew who brought her team from third into first. Senior Zoe Sims and Berardo maintained the positioning on the next two legs for Princeton's first win in the 4x800 since 2013.
The 4x400 closed out the day with a fourth-place finish. Quinn Parker, Baron, Willingham and Steele put together a 3:43.14.
Princeton captured 10 points in the heptathlon as junior Maia Craver and sophomore Frances Lodge went 3-4. Craver finished third with 4,902 points while Lodge had 4,869 for fourth place. Craver ended Day 1 in third place after victories in both the shot and the 200. Today she was fifth in the long jump, sixth in the 800 and eight in the javelin. With a runner-up finish in the javelin, Lodge moved from fifth place into fourth place. She was also fourth in the 800 and seventh in the long jump this afternoon.
