Another Weekend Sweep for Princeton as the Tigers Top New Hampshire 3-1
September 10, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Though the Princeton women's soccer team conceded its first goal of the season Sunday afternoon against New Hampshire, the perfect start to the 2017 campaign is intact after a 3-1 win.
Princeton lasted 511:57 before giving up a goal, the second-longest streak to start a season in program history. Only the 2001 team, which went into the 88th minute of its sixth game before giving up a goal, went longer.
Sophomore Courtney O'Brien, who scored her first two career goals Thursday night against Rider, had two more against UNH, putting the Tigers on the board in the 28th minute when she headed home a corner kick from senior Vanessa Gregoire and retaking the lead in the 71st minute when her try across the endline snuck past New Hampshire keeper Mia Neas.Â
UNH had tied the game when the Wildcats' Brooke Murphy took possession of a ball about 35 yards out from goal and fired toward the net, arcing the shot over a drawn-out sophomore keeper Natalie Grossi in the 62nd minute.
Rookie Carolyne Davidson scored her first career goal with three minutes to play when she redirected a pass from senior Mikaela Symanovich mid-air and put it inside the left post, sending Princeton to a 6-0 start for the second straight year.
Princeton had faced New Hampshire just once before, a 2-0 win back in 1987 at Lourie-Love Field. UNH hadn't given up more than one goal in any game this season and hadn't done so since a 3-2 America East loss to Stony Brook last Oct. 20.
The Tigers will host current No. 3 West Virginia Friday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU. The Mountaineers will be playing on the road for just the second time this season and first since the season opener at Georgetown. WVU took just its second loss of the season this week when No. 6 Duke came into Morgantown for a 4-0 win Friday night before the Mountaineers turned around to beat Richmond 3-0 Sunday to stand at 5-2.
