Steffensen Takes Down Ranked Foe as Women's Tennis Team Opens Play
September 15, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Senior Katrine Steffensen took down the No. 4-ranked player in the country Friday in her opening match of the fall season when she topped North Carolina's Sara Daavettila 7-5, 5-7, (11-9) at the ITA Hall of Fame Grass Court tournament in Newport, R.I.
Daavettila held the ranking when the ITA revealed its preseason list earlier this month, rankings that will last until the next edition Jan. 3.
The win was Steffensen's first as a Tiger against an ITA-ranked opponent. All four of Princeton's singles matches Friday came against ranked foes, with rookie Stephanie Schrage battling North Carolina's 22nd-ranked Jessie Aney in two close sets and sophomore Gaby Pollner taking North Texas' 41st-ranked Maria Kononova to a tiebreak third set. Schrage went on to team with junior Nicole Kalhorn to come within a point of an upset against 12th-ranked Aney and Alexa Graham of UNC.
Princeton's Friday results are below, and Saturday's matches, which will begin at 10 a.m., are listed here.
