No. 20 Princeton Handles Delaware, 3-0
September 17, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Rebounding from Friday's close loss to No. 6 West Virginia, the 20th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team controlled possession throughout on the way to a 3-0 win at Delaware.
Senior Mikaela Symanovich had the first goal for the Tigers, converting a 16th-minute Vanessa Gregoire corner kick with a header, followed by two more goals from sophomore Abby Givens to give her a team-best six on the season as the Tigers outshot the Blue Hens 24-1 overall. Givens had her first in the 28th minute, taking a ball from a Delaware defender just outside the box and getting into a one-on-one chance with Delaware keeper Kailyn Rekos before burying the try. Givens made it 3-0 in the 61st minute, heading home a Gregoire corner.Â
The game was the last for Princeton before Ivy League play begins Saturday at Roberts Stadium against Yale, which started 6-0 before going 0-2-1 in its last three games heading into the conference opener.Â
Princeton moved to 4-2 all-time against Delaware, winning for the second straight year in the series. At 7-1 for the second straight year, Princeton and sophomore keeper Natalie Grossi and the back line have six shutouts in their first eight games for the first time since 2001 and just the fifth time in program history, along with 1980, 1981 and 2000.Â
The Yale game, set for Saturday at 4 p.m., will close the five-match homestand for the Tigers, who'll play five of their last seven on the road.
