Monday Notes: Kanoff/Wall Earn Honors, Carlson/Fossati Earn Game Balls
September 18, 2017 | Football
For Chad Kanoff, it was his 21st consecutive start. For CJ Wall, it was first collegiate game.
For both, it was a sweet victory that earned each an individual honor.
Chad Kanoff, who completed nearly 75% of his passes Saturday for 352 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, was named the Suburban Transit/GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week after leading the Tigers to a 27-17 victory over the University of San Diego on Saturday. Kanoff, who was a perfect 4 for 4 on the game-clinching drive, moved past both Jeff Terrell '07 and Jason Garrett '89 and now stands third all-time at Princeton with 4,388 career passing yards.
Kanoff is now 14-7 as a starter at Princeton. Wall is 1-0, and he played a big role in that win. He earned Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week honors after ending one San Diego drive with a fumble recovery inside the 5, and then he iced the game with a diving interception in the end zone to conclude San Diego's final drive. Wall is Princeton's first Ivy League Rookie of the Week since Tavish Rice earned the same honor following the season-opening win last year.
Princeton announced its game ball recipients over the weekend, and neither was a surprise. Wideout Stephen Carlson earned one after his historic day, when he caught six passes for 97 yards, including three touchdowns. That was the most touchdowns for a Princeton receiver since Michael Lerch caught four in a 1991 game against Brown, and he added two catches on 3rd and 16 in the final drive to help keep San Diego off the field.
Senior Mark Fossati also earned a game ball after posting a career-best 12 tackles in his first game at inside linebacker. Fossati had five solo stops and two quarterback hurries against the reigning Pioneer League champion.
Princeton head coach Bob Surace now turns his attention to Saturday's road opener against Lafayette, where a very familiar face will roam the Leopards sideline. John Garrett '88, who played one year with Surace at Princeton (1987) and worked with him for three years at the Cincinnati Bengals, is in his first year as head coach at Lafayette. Check GoPrincetonTigers.com on Wednesday for a video feature on the duo, which was interviewed together during the weekend of Jason Garrett's Play-It-Smart Camp in May.
