Colina Selected as NWPC Player of the Week, No. 11 Tigers Prepare For Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association's weekly Varsity Poll and Player of the Week accolades came out today. The Tigers are currently tied for No. 11 while Jordan Colina was honored as the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Player of the Week.
Colina was selected as the NWPC Player of the Week after posting 16 points, 11 goals and five assists over the 4-0 weekend at the Navy Open. The Tigers began Saturday with a tripleheader, dropping Salem International (21-9), Fordham (12-7), and LaSalle (15-8). On Sunday, head coach Luis Nicolao's unit defeated Navy, 17-11.
Colina and Ryan Wilson are tied for the team lead with 16 points (five goals and 11 helpers). Sean Duncan posted a career-high six goals vs. Navy and finished with 13 tallies over the four games. 13 different Tigers scored during the team's four-game winning streak. Each of the squad's three goalies made appearances as well. Ryan Melosini broke the single-game record with 22 stops vs. Salem International. Alex Essig made 17 saves in his start vs. LaSalle while Vojislav Mitrovic has 27 saves in two starts.
Top five remain the same in the Varsity Poll with Cal., leading the way, followed by USC, Stanford, UCLA and Pacific. Harvard is still the best NWPC team, in the 10th position.
The Princeton Invitational has 13 teams making the trek to the DeNunzio this weekend. No. 4 UCLA is the top squad with No. 17 George Washington, Wagner, Santa Clara, Chapman, No. 18 St. Francis Brooklyn, Iona, Navy, Fordham, Johns Hopkins, No. 14 Brown, No. 10 Harvard and No. 16 Bucknell also in the invitational.
Play begins on Friday at 2:20 p.m. with No. 17 George Washington and No. 4 UCLA. The Tigers have two meetings that day against Chapman (5 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins (9 p.m.) Princeton is 2-0 against Chapman with the last matchup coming in 2013. The Tigers have only lost five times to the Johns Hopkins in 48 contests including their current six-game winning streak vs. Johns Hopkins.
On Saturday, Nicolao's unit plays once, against Santa Clara, a team that the Tigers have beaten six consecutive times. The Tigers take on No. 4 UCLA on Sunday (1 p.m.) a game that will be featured on ESPNU. UCLA has never lost Princeton.
Every game except for the Princeton, UCLA game on Sunday will be on the Ivy League Network. Here's the schedule for the Invitational.
