Reiner & Colvin Strike but Tigers Suffer 4-3 OT Defeat to the Hall
September 07, 2017 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/7/17) - A goal by Andres Arcila in the 104th minute spoiled Princeton's home opener as Seton Hall earned a 4-3 come-from-behind win on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Senior James Reiner scored twice while junior Jeremy Colvin had a goal and an assist as the Tigers net three goals in just under seven minutes. With a 3-0 lead in the first 51 minutes and controlling the ball it looked as though the Tigers had this one locked up.
The defense didn't allow a single shot on goal in the first half, making things easy for the Ivy League Player of the Week Jacob Schachner in goal.
Reiner tallied his first goal of the young season, with just 58 seconds remaining in the first half. It was set up by sophomore Cole Morokhovich who had the ball in front of the Seton Hall bench before he launched it into the box for Reiner to get a right foot on the ball and push it past goalkeeper Elliot Munford.
Colvin added to the lead less than three minutes later, his first marker of the season. Freshman Michael Osei Wusu delivered Colvin the ball from along the near touchline, went down with injury on the play, while Colvin took dribbled down the right side and buried it into the far corner.
Reiner and Colvin teamed up for the Tigers' third goal in the 51st minute. Colvin made a run and used his speed to get by Munford and centered for Reiner playing the trailer and he had the open net for his first career multiple-goal game.
Seton Hall began its comeback off a corner kick in the 59th minute as Juan Camila Abella redirected the corner to Marco Neves who booted in a chip shot. Jonathan Jimenez raced up the right flank before centering to Arcila to make it a 3-2 game in the 67th. With a foul called right outside the box, the Pirates were given a free kick in the final four seconds that a header and quick foot was able to convert into an equalizer.
"The goal they got on the corner kick was somewhat of a gift, as we lost track of a guy in the box and they get a free shot on the ground when we have 10 guys in the box," Princeton associate head coach Steve Totten said. "It should never happen. And it gave them some life. Then they get another one on a counter attack and then they start to believe in themselves a little more and it's a battle. And again in the last second of regulation we lost track of a man in the box. We only have ourselves to blame. We played really well for stretched but you give a team so many chance in extra life maybe they find a way to get back into the game – and they did."
The game-winning goal came once again on a set piece, from the top of the box as Arcila took the free kick and blasted it into the back of the net.
Princeton had a 21-19 edge in shots and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Schachner made a career-high five saves in goal for the Tigers. Munford stopped four for the Pirates.
Princeton returns to Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium next Friday, Sept. 15 when it hosts SIUE at 7 p.m.
