Tigers Fall in Final Minute Against Cougars, 1-0
September 15, 2017 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/15/17) - The opportunities were there. The Tigers could feel a goal coming as they continued to dribble past midfielders and blow get by defenders, with shots on goal falling 15-8 in their favor. The unthinkable happened when with just 14.7 seconds left SIUE scored with a TC Hull header.
With 1:07 remaining in regulation, Princeton had all the momentum in the world. Benjamin Martin, playing at center back today, launched a restart into the box and after it battled around before what looked like matching fouls in a tussle for possession between Sean McSherry and Jorge Gonzalez. With the ball going to the Cougars right in front of the Princeton bench with 40 seconds remaining. The restart was launched into the attacking third and was corralled by Greg Solawa and saw Eric Tejada streaking up the right side unmarked. He one-timed the ball into the box and Hull got a head on it and directed it to the right of Jacob Schachner and it brushed off his glove and into the back of the goal.
Princeton took six corner kicks in the game, while SIUE had zero thanks to the Tiger defense. The defense was solid and didn't allow the Cougars to break through its back line until the 35th minute but it was an easy save by Schachner. His best save was on Devyn Jambga in the 77th minute when he grabbed the ball at the left post. Schachner finished the game with three saves.
Kyle Dal Santo was kept busy and stopped eight shots on net. Freshman Michael Osei Wusu, senior Harry Heffernan, junior Jeremy Colvin and had grade A scoring chances as did junior Will Lentz and freshman Kevin O'Toole.
Princeton will be on the road for its next two games before returning home to host Rutgers in an ESPNU game on Tuesday, Sept. 26. First up is a trip to Boston University on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
