Princeton Sweeps Ivy Weekly Awards
January 08, 2018 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – For their performances against the Penn Quakers, Bella Alarie (Player of the Week) and Carlie Littlefield (Rookie of the Week) were honored by the Ivy League today.
Â
This is Alarie's third Player of the Week honor this year and sixth in her career. She has been picked for 15 weekly Ivy honors. Last season, the sophomore tied the program record with nine Rookie of the Week awards along with three Player of the Week selections. Littlefield has gathered three Rookie of the Week distinctions.
Â
Alarie went 7-of-11 from the floor against the Quakers, scoring 18 points, while grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking a ridiculous eight shots. Her eight swats broke a career high and are one shy of Ellen DeVoe's nine against Rider (Feb. 25, 1984). It was her 15th career double-double.
Â
While Littlefield only scored eight points, all eight came in the second half. Her most impressive basket came as Princeton was trying to put the game away with 1:47 to go. The freshman dribbled across the court, made a defender fall over and laid it in. She added five assists, and six rebounds on the offensive end as well. Defensively, the point guard was lights out, creating havoc against Penn. Littlefield helped hold Anna Ross to just 3-of-10 shooting and Lauren Whitlach to 3-of-8 from the floor.
Â
After a trey from Penn's Princess Aghayere got the home team within eight (61-53) with four minutes to go, but Princeton shut the door defensively. The Tigers did not allow a basket over the final four minutes and made all five free-throws in that stretch to put the game away. Penn's 32.8 percent shooting was its lowest since a loss to No. 2 Notre Dame on December 9th.
Â
Columbia (Jan. 12) and Cornell (Jan. 13) come to Jadwin Gym this week in the first Ivy League weekend of the season. The Columbia matchup is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off while the Cornell contest will tip-off at 4:30 p.m. Each game will be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
