Princeton Moves Into First Place in Ivy League with 2-1 Win at Columbia
October 13, 2018 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team is now holding down the Ivy League standings with seven points, moving into first place after a 2-1 win over Columbia as the Tigers remain unbeaten at 2-0-1. Columbia had a slight edge in the standings coming in with a 2-0 record before the Tigers handed them their first league loss of the season.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first 29 minutes with goals from seniors Sean McSherry and Jeremy Colvin.
McSherry's goal came in the 16th minute off a Bobby Hickson throw in. Hickson played catch with Kevin O'Toole before launching the ball into the box where McSherry used some nifty footwork to get around his defender and bury the opening goal past Dylan Castenheira.
Colvin added his fourth game-winning goal of the season in the 29th minute when he took advantage of a miscue by Castenheira and fired a loss ball into the right corner of the open goal.
It marked the first time a team has scored twice in the first half on Columbia since Oct. 24, 2015 - a stretch of 47 games.
Columbia (5-4-1, 2-1 Ivy) shuffled its lineup at the start of the second to try to break the high press by Princeton (7-4-1, 2-0-1 Ivy). With Andrew Stevens at striker he was able to get his team on the board with the first shot on goal in the 62nd minute finishing off a cross from Danny Laranetto. The Princeton defense continued to do a great job at limiting direct shots on goal and Jacob Schachner came off his line to collect a number of loose balls before they could be of any danger.
Colvin was itching to get another goal as he had three straight chances in a matter of minutes. His teammates set him up well with his first being a touch too wide of the far post, the second right on frame and the third bobbled but collected by Castenheira.
In the waning minutes the Lions pushed forward and had an opportunity with a free kick from 20 yards out dead center. Schachner made a big save leaping up to push a John Denis ball over the cross bar. Blake Willis tried again with just seconds remaining with the ball glancing off the right post.
Princeton will cap its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they take on Drexel at 6 p.m. Then the Ivy race resumes on Saturday, Oct. 20 when Princeton hosts Harvard at 4 p.m.
