Alarie Named To McClain Award Watch List For Second Straight Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the second straight season, Bella Alarie has been named as one of the 20 watch-list candidates for the 2019 Katrina McClain Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today.

Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its inaugural year recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.

After a tremendous freshman season where she was selected first-team All-Ivy and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Alarie was honored as the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2018. She averaged 13.3 points on .489 percent shooting, 9.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. The two-time first team All-Ivy player's 79 blocks in 2018 broke her own single-season record while 283 boards were the third most in a single-season in program history. She added 12 double-doubles and won Ivy Player of the Week six times in her sophomore campaign.

In 2016-17, Alarie was one of four freshmen in program history to start every game, lead the team in scoring (12.6), rebounding (8.0), blocks (51), field goals (139) and minutes played (919). She placed in the Ivy League's top ten in defensive rebounds (third), blocks (fourth), total rebounds (fifth), three-point field goal percentage (sixth), scoring (ninth), field goals (ninth), field goal percentage (ninth).

She ranked in the top five all-time for freshman single-season records in games played (tied for first), blocks (first), three-point attempts (109, second), three-pointers made (39, third), rebounds (241, third), points (377, fourth), field goals (fifth) and field goal attempts (322).

The Selection Committee for the Katrina McClain Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Katrina McClain Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. McClain-Pittman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.

The winner of the 2018 Katrina McClain Power Forward Award will be announced during on an ESPN platform during the 2019 NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Fla. Last season, Ruthy Hebard of Oregon was named the inaugural winner of the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award.
