Emily Kallfelz Named Inaugural USRowing U-23 Female Athlete Of The Year
October 04, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
All things considered, 2018 has been a pretty good year for Emily Kallfelz.
The senior co-captain of the Princeton open rowing team spent the spring leading the Tigers to their third straight Ivy League championship, a streak that has seen Kallfelz row in each of those three championship 1V boats. She then stroked Princeton to a Top-5 finish at the NCAA Championships in the 1V final, the program's best finish in the event since 2013.
Kallfelz earned First-Team All-America honors for her junior season, and she followed that up this summer by winning the 1x final at the U-23 Trials to earn her second straight spot on the USA team. One year after winning bronze in the 1x final, Kallfelz moved up a spot on the medal podium and took silver in the 2018 U-23 World Championships in Poland.
In the fall, Kallfelz became the inaugural winner of the USRowing Under-23 Female Athlete of the Year. Selected by the athletes and coaches of the team that competed at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Poznan, Poland, both Kallfelz and male recipient Andrew Gaard will be honored at the 2018 Golden Oars Gala on Thursday, November 15, at the New York Athletic Club's Manhattan location.

"It's really nice of people to think that I'm worthy of such recognition," Kallfelz said to USRowing. "There are a lot of people who were definitely worthy of nominations, so I'm very grateful for that. It's really nice to be recognized. I appreciate it."
In addition to her two medal-winning performances on the U-23 team, Kallfelz finished fourth in the U-23 double sculls in 2016 and raced in the quadruple sculls at the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2014 and 2015, winning a bronze medal in 2015.
