Golfer Mayer Honors Military Alumnus Through Folds of Honor Program
November 05, 2018 | Men's Golf
Sophomore Jake Mayer never met Wilton Pyle '68, but Pyle's name follows Mayer and his teammates wherever the Princeton men's golf team goes.
Mayer was interested in bringing the Folds of Honor program to Princeton. The Princeton Alumni Veterans Committee recommended Pyle, who reached the rank of Second Lieutenant and served in Vietnam when he lost his life there in 1969 at 23 years old. Pyle now rests at Arlington National Cemetery.
Mayer and the Tigers fundraise for the bag, which has "Second Lieutenant / Wilton Stroud Pyle / U.S. Marine Corps" stitched on a side. At the end of the season, they'll auction off the bag with proceeds going to Folds of Honor, which provides scholarships to spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service.Â
Mayer's connection to the program was recently profiled here.
On the course, Mayer competed in every event in the fall season, which wrapped up with a team title at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational last month, after competing in eight events as a freshman. The Tigers will begin their spring season in a few months with the Ivy League Championship in late April.
