EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton skated to a 4-4 draw with No. 9 Penn State during its last time out, on Dec. 15 at the Wells Fargo Center. The Tigers will play six games, all at home, before taking a three week break for final exams. First up is a two-game series with Maine out of Hockey East. Princeton is 3-8-2 overall and is looking to turn things around as the second half of the season has arrived. Five Tigers are in double digits in scoring led by senior Ryan Kuffner with 21 points with a team-best 10 goals and 11 assists. Linemate Max Veronneau has 19 points with 14 coming by way of assists. Seniors Josh Teves and Alex Riche both chip in 11 points, and junior Jackson Cressey adds 10. Sophomore Ryan Ferland has started in all 13 games in goal and has a .902 save percentage and a 3.21 goals against average. Senior Austin Shaw earned the tie against Penn State, not allowing a goal in 45 minutes of play. The Princeton power play ranks 10th nationally at 23.4 percent (11/47), while the penalty kill is 22nd at 82.9 percent (34/41).
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
Maine comes to Princeton with a 5-7-2 overall record and has been idle for the last 20 days. The Black Bears played back to back overtime games with Vermont, winning the first and tying the second, before facing the USA Under-18 team in an exhibition in Michigan on Dec. 8. Three juniors lead the team in scoring with Chase Pearson (DET) leading the way with 14 points on eight goals and six assists. Mitchell Fossier has 11 assists and one goal. Tim Doherty has eight points with five goals and three assists. Sophomore Jeremy Swayman (BOS) has started in goal in every game and has a .913 save percentage and a 2.91 GAA. Maine's penalty killing unit highlights the special teams, as it ranks 10th nationally at 86.7 percent (65/75). The power play however is 56th at 10.9 percent (7/64).
THE PRINCETON/MAINE SERIES
Maine holds an 8-5-1 advantage in the all-time series since the team's first met on Jan. 5, 1978. The teams have played jut twice at Hobey Baker Rink, in 1980 and 1982 with some high scoring results with an 11-4 Maine win in 1980 and a 7-6 Princeton win in 1982. The teams met three times during the 2015-16 season with Princeton winning 3-1 in Trenton in the season opener before Maine swept in November 5-3 and 3-2 in overtime in Orono.
