Ferland Makes 40 Saves as Princeton Blanks Maine, 1-0

Sophomore Ryan Ferland made 40 saves as Princeton posted a 1-0 shutout over Maine on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
"It was a great bounce back for Ferland, after his 21 minute game versus Penn State, which was not his best career performance," head coach Ron Fogarty said. "The break was good for him, and for the team in general."
Princeton (4-8-2) earns its first 1-0 win since the Jan. 26, 2016 and its first shutout since a 4-0 game at Arizona State last December. The win snapped an eight game winless skid for the Tigers.
Senior Ryan Kuffner netted his 11th goal of the season at 8:11 of the middle frame on the power play, with linemates Alex Riche and Max Véronneau assisting. The goal was Kuffner's 64th career goal as he moves into second place all-time at Princeton in goals. He needs just three more to tie the all-time record of 67 held by John Cook for the last 55 years.
Princeton was 1 for 2 on the power play while Maine was 0 for 1.
The Black Bears didn't get its power play opportunity until 1:58 in the game. Jeremy Swayman was pulled in favor of the extra attacker with 1:34 remaining but after a monster stop by Ferland with 43 seconds left the defense kept Maine at bay.
The Tigers and Maine (5-8-2) rematch tomorrow night at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
