After Leading Tigers Past #8 Lehigh, Dale Tiongson Earns Suburban Transit/GPT.com Athlete Of The Week
December 03, 2018 | General, Wrestling
Dale Tiongson took the mat Friday night with a chance to change the momentum of a team dual at 8th-ranked Lehigh. As it turned out, he may have changed the momentum of the young season, and he helped Princeton to one of its best team wins in program history.
Tiongson defeated 11th-ranked Cole Walter of Lehigh 5-3 to open a 13-10 lead during Princeton's eventual 21-19 victory over the Mountain Hawks. The victory was Princeton's first over its EIWA rival since 1968, and its first ever at Lehigh.
The win also helped Tiongson earn the Suburban Transit/GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week honor.
"Dale's match was especially awesome," head coach Chris Ayres said after the match. "I told the guys before the match that you have to attack more than them. They fed off each other. I told Dale he had to have composure, and I could see at one point when he was all-in. He smelled blood in the third, and he took advantage of it. There's a moment it clicked for him, and it just changes you as a wrestler."
Princeton had dropped a pair of one-point matches during the first half of the dual to face a 10-10 tie at intermission, but Tiongson went out determined to upset the 11th-ranked Walter, an NCAA qualifier. He led 3-2 entering the third period, and he secured the below takedown to extend that edge to 5-2. Though he gave up an escape, Tiongson refused to allow any other points; minutes later, both Kevin Parker and #7 Patrick Brucki added wins to give Princeton its biggest win of the 2000s.
Princeton will head to Virginia this weekend for a pair of matches, starting Friday night at #13 Virginia Tech.
