Tigers Drop Sunday Pair in Florida
March 18, 2018 | Softball
Ending its four-game stay at South Florida's tournament Sunday, the Princeton softball team fell 15-1 to Elon in a five-inning game before turning around to face Florida Gulf Coast in a 6-2 win for the home-staters in Clearwater, Fla.
For Elon, Hannah Olson doubled home a leadoff walk to Erica Serafini in the first before Princeton answered in the top of the second with an Alex Colón sacrifice fly that picked up a leadoff double from Keeley Walsh to tie it at 1-1. Elon took the lead back with a run in its half of the second when a Serafini sac fly scored a Katrina Martin, who was hit by a pitch and moved around a pair of wild pitches, and the Phoenix broke it open with a 13-run third inning. The big frame saw Elon send 19 batters to the plate, getting six hits and drawing seven walks and taking two hit-by-pitches. Only one hit was for extra bases in the inning, a three-run double for Ashtyn Foddrell.
Ashley LaGuardia took the loss for the Tigers in the opener while Caroline Taber also saw time in the third. Kenna Quinn got the win for Elon, working three innings and splitting time with Abby Barker.
A four-run third inning staked FGCUÂ to a 4-0 lead with three extra-base hits doing the damage. Racquel Fournet had a triple to bring home a leadoff Kelly single, and Brooke Clemens followed with a two-run double after a walk to Brittany McGuire. Ward doubled two batters after Clemens for the inning's final run.
Princeton halved the deficit in the fourth. Walsh doubled home Kylee Pierce, who was running for Allison Harvey's leadoff single. Emily Taggart had an RBI-single two batters later to pick up Walsh as the Tigers pulled within 4-2. FGCU, though, got the two runs back in the sixth, when two singles and a walk set up a McGuire sac fly on which runners from second and third scored.
Morgan White, the second of three FGCU pitchers, got the win for the Eagles while Allie Reynolds took the loss for Princeton.
The Tigers will continue their spring trip to Florida with midweek twinbills at Stetson Tuesday and Central Florida Wednesday, both at 4 p.m.
