Columbia Edges Men's Lightweights To Split Caldwell Cup Series
March 31, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The sixth-ranked Columbia men's lightweight rowing team edged second-ranked Princeton by just over one second Saturday morning at Overpeck Park to claim its first victory in the Campbell Cup series, which began last year with a Tiger win on Lake Carnegie. The result provides another indication of how tightly packed the men's lightweight field should be in 2018.
Both teams split the four races during the morning session, though it was the Lions who came away with the biggest one and the matching trophy. The Lions, in their first dual race of the spring, took the win in 6:03.6, while Princeton finished second in 6:04.7. The Lion 2V also earned a win in 6:05.9, while Princeton finished second in 6:10.4.
The Princeton 3V and 4V both left Overpeck Park with decisive wins. The 3V took its race in 6:16.7 to win by more than nine seconds, a victory that improved that boat to 3-0 on the young season. The 4V won by 21 seconds in a time of 6:30.4; the Princeton 5V also competed in that race, and it nearly pulled off a win of its own against the Lions 4V, though it ultimately lost by less than two seconds.
Princeton will open a three-week homestand next Saturday morning at 10 am when it takes on #8 Delaware and #10 Dartmouth during a full morning of home racing on Lake Carnegie. The full regatta will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
