Women's Lights Honor Seniors, Turn Focus To Eastern Sprints
April 21, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team honored its Class of 2018 during its final home regatta on Lake Carnegie, and the Tigers also put together a solid final tuneup for next Sunday's Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
Though Princeton was unable to grab the win against an improved Georgetown squad, head coach Paul Rassam believes in his group as it turns full focus to next Sunday. He was also proud of the effort his team put forth during Senior Day on Lake Carnegie.
"The races we lost were tight and very hard fought," Rassam said. "You could tell people were pouring their hearts out for these seniors who have been such a huge part of our program and culture. The sun will rise again tomorrow and we have five weeks and two huge races left to put it all together for (and with) these senior leaders."
The Princeton 1V pushed hard out of the start and actually grabbed 3-4 seats fairly quickly over the Hoyas, but Georgetown found its speed around the second 500 and was able to claim the lead before the 1000-meter mark. The Tigers stayed in contact throughout the race and cut the deficit with a late sprint, but Georgetown answered with one of its own to grab the win by 2.2 seconds.
It was another indication of how tight racing is expected to be next Sunday; last weekend, both Georgetown and Princeton were locked in a tight Knecht Cup final with both Boston University and Wisconsin in a potential Sprints final.
The varsity four was an equally tight race, with the Hoyas pulling out a 1.5-second win. The Tiger double had the most dominant performance of the day, topping Georgetown by more than 35 seconds.
Princeton celebrated a senior class that helped the Tigers return to both the Sprints and IRA medal stands last year, and will try for even more over the next five weeks. Those seniors are Sandra Carpenter, Megan Mirabella, Kathleen Noble, Emily Schneider, and Madeline Travnik.
