Women's Lights Have Best Sprints Since 2011, Claim Three Silvers & 2nd In Team Points Race
April 29, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team put forth its best performance at the EAWRC Championships since 2011 on Sunday, as the Tigers claimed three silver medals and finished as the runner-up in the team points standings.
The highlight event of the regatta on Lake Quinsigamond was the varsity eight grand final, and Princeton put forth its best race of the season at a good time. Boston University, the only team with a win over Stanford this season, was able to navigate its local course to win gold in 6:54.565, but Princeton made a big move over the second 500 to get past both Wisconsin and Georgetown.
The Tigers, who fell to Georgetown twice over the previous two weeks, showed how much they improved with a strong final 1,000 meters to take the silver in 7:00.95. Wisconsin held third in 7:04.994, a finish that helped the Badgers edge Princeton for the team points title.
"We talked as a team in December about going for the team points trophy," head coach Paul Rassam said. "We came up just shy of that today, but that was some good aggressive racing from our crews. All of our crews had their best race of the season today. You can't ask for much more than that."
Wisconsin got away from the field in the varsity four, but Princeton also showed big improvement over the span of a week in this race. The Tigers, who had fallen to Georgetown by 1.5 seconds last week, topped the Hoyas by more than 2.5 seconds to win the silver.
The Princeton double had the race of the day, a two-team showdown with Wisconsin for gold. The Badgers would end up getting the win by less than 1.5 seconds, while no other boat would finish within 22 seconds of either. The 3V8, a mostly novice boat that has developed well this season, finished within a second of the medal dock.
The Tigers will try to continue their improvement over the next few weeks before making the short trip to Mercer Lake for the 2018 IRA National Championships.
