Another Thrilling Finish Earns Lights Both The Goldthwait & Vogel Cups Over #1 Harvard, #4 Yale
April 28, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Racing both the top-ranked boat in the nation and a Top-4 crew competing on its challenging home course, there was no lack of obstacles for the fifth-ranked lightweight men as they hit the final stretch of its Goldthwait Cup showdown Saturday morning. But this Princeton team lined up plenty of obstacles throughout the spring, and it had already knocked most of them down.
On Saturday, they knocked over their biggest — and most historic — of all.
A blazing sprint from the Princeton lightweight V8 — its second such finish in the last three weeks — helped the Tigers reclaim the Goldthwait Cup Saturday morning in Derby, Conn. Yale led the majority of the race (see highlights above), but Princeton grabbed a seat lead over the final 250 meters and held off a final charge to win by 1.2 seconds.
"With 500 meters to go, Danny Hogan whispered the magic 3-letter word — Win — while James Goble added an inspirational 'Here we go!'" said senior James Sincavage. "Without hesitation, each member of the crew responded with a momentous push for the line. Confidence was key."
"Step away Philadelphia 76ers, Princeton crew is Trusting the Process," classmate James Goble said. "We've worked our way through the dual season and learned important lessons. Races like the tough Cornell dual a few weeks back have really built a confidence amongst the guys.
"Our race plan has been, to quote Basement Jaxx, to "do your thing." Whether we're up down, left or right, we've developed a totally confident mindset that we can execute our race plan from any position, and we did that well today," Goble added.
The victory earned Princeton its 28th Goldthwait Cup, the second-most of the three teams. Ironically, three of Princeton's last four Goldthwait Cups (2009, 2015, 2018) have come on the Housatonic. The Princeton 1V needed only a runner-up finish to also reclaim the Goldthwait Cup for the first time since 2015, thanks to a brilliant team-wide showing earlier in the regatta. The Tiger 4V started the victorious run by topping Yale by about three seconds, and the 3V followed by beating Yale by less than two seconds.
The 2V followed its wins over Penn and Georgetown by topping Yale by nearly four seconds, and then the 1V posted its big victory.
"The most important takeaway from today is earning the Vogel Cup in a team points victory," Sincavage said. "With seniors strongly represented in every crew, the class of 2018's self-less influence on today's HYP victories is a special way to end our dual racing careers as Princeton rowers."
"HYP is a great event," Goble added. "It's not by accident that HYP spells 75% of the word "Hype". It's awesome. I now only have a few more races with the team and to compete in an epic HYP regatta, with so many guys getting great result is a real honor."
Princeton will now begin preparations for Eastern Sprints, which will be held in two weeks on Lake Quinsigamond. While the lightweight field has traditionally been wide open, this year's event could be one of the tightest. No boat will enter the meet unbeaten, and several of the Top-5 crews have had races decided by less than three seconds.
