Reynolds Tosses Shutout as Tigers Split Pair with Dartmouth
April 06, 2018 | Softball
With the split, Princeton moved to 3-5 in the Ivy. Harvard leads heading into Saturday's play at 7-4, followed by Columbia and Penn at 6-5 and then Dartmouth at 5-3. Cornell (3-3), Brown (2-4), the Tigers and Yale (4-7) round out the standings.
In game one, Princeton scored first when Mikayla Blaska had the third of three consecutive singles, driving home a leadoff base hit from Kaitlyn Waslawski. A Kylee Pierce single and a two-base error on a ball Waslawski hit put the Tigers up 2-0 in the fourth, and an Allison Harvey single, Keeley Walsh getting hit by a pitch, a Kaylee Grant double and a throwing error added up to three more runs in the fifth. Megan Donahey and Walsh had doubles in the sixth for Princeton's final run.
Just four Dartmouth runners reached second base against Reynolds in the opener and none further as the Tiger rookie earned her second complete-game shutout of the season along with her March 17 no-hitter against Florida A&M.
The back-and-forth nightcap saw Princeton take a lead in the first when Harvey doubled home Donahey in the opening inning, but a hit batter, a single, a throwing error that would have been the first out of the inning and a two-out two-RBI double by Dartmouth's Micah Schroder pushed two runs across for a 2-1 lead in the second.
Dartmouth pushed it to 3-1 in the third on a hit batter, two walks and two singles but left the bases loaded as starter Ashley LaGuardia gave way to Caroline Taber, and Princeton closed the gap in the bottom half of the inning when Walsh drew a two-out walk and Mackenzie Meyer hit a two-run home run to tie it.Â
That tie, though, only lasted until Dartmouth's next at-bat, as Morgan Martinelli answered with a two-run shot to put the Big Green up 5-3 in the fourth. Four walks gave Dartmouth another run in the fifth, and the Big Green lead became 7-3 in the sixth when Taylor Ward's single picked up a leadoff Schae Nelson double.Â
Princeton got one run back in the last of the sixth when Danielle Dockx had an RBI-single to pick up an earlier walk, and though Dartmouth got that run back in the seventh when Martinelli singled home a Big Green walk, Princeton had one last rally. The last of the seventh saw Princeton capitalize on a throwing error to start the inning, followed by a Blaska double and a Harvey run-scoring single to pull within 8-5. Grant then added an RBI-single later in the inning to make it 8-6, but Princeton left runners on first and second as the rally stalled.
Princeton and Dartmouth will close the series with a single game Saturday at 12:30 p.m. back at '95 Field. Admission is free, and the Ivy League Network will have the coverage. Live stats will be available here.
