First-Inning Run Holds Up as Tigers Battle Cornell in Season Finale

In what became a pitchers' duel between Princeton senior Ashley LaGuardia and Cornell's Katie Lew, a first-inning Big Red run was the difference in a 1-0 Cornell win Sunday in both teams' season finale at the Class of 1895 Field.

Cornell's Megan Murray led off the game with a double off the fence in centerfield, and three batters later, the Big Red's Tori Togashi dropped a single into left to bring home Murray and give Cornell a 1-0 lead. From there, LaGuardia retired 10 in a row and 16 of the final 19 batters she faced, letting only one runner into scoring position the rest of the way when Rebecca Kubena sent a triple into right field in the sixth.

Though the Tigers outhit Cornell 6-4, Princeton couldn't come up with the key hit to tie it. Lew retired the Tiger side in order in three of Princeton's seven at-bats, stranding three runners in scoring position to preserve the lead.

Princeton finishes the season with a 10-29 record overall and with a trio of seniors, including outfielder Kylee Pierce, infielder Danielle Dockx and pitcher LaGuardia, all going the full seven in their final games as Tigers.
