Varsity Eight Rallies Past Penn, Will Race For 1st IRA Gold Since 2010
Saturday Update • Due to weather projections, the men's lightweight IRA grand final will now be held at 7:37 am Sunday on Mercer Lake. The 4s will be held at 9:22 and the 4- will be held at 9:29.
Princeton understands that its ultimate memories from the 2018 IRA Championships will come from Sunday's performances and results. That being said, the Tigers raced Friday in three opening heats, and they showed just why they were one point away from a team points crown at Eastern Sprints.
The Princeton men's lightweights won each of their three heats Friday morning, including a tense varsity eight semifinal that was as loaded as any in recent memory. The second-seeded Tigers raced all three medalists from last year's IRA final — and just as they did three weeks earlier on Lake Quinsigamond, the Tigers surpassed them all.
Princeton won the second semifinal of the IRA national championships Saturday, overcoming a slight deficit to Penn over the first 1000-1500 meters to win by more than 1.5 seconds. While the entire field was within six seconds of each other, the late drama came in two-team showdowns. Princeton edged Sprints bronze medalist Penn to hold its seed, while Yale eliminated reigning national champion Cornell to claim the final spot in the final.
Princeton will race for its first IRA national championship since 2010 Sunday at the updated time of 7:37 am; the Tigers will race from Lane 2 in the final and go against top-seeded Columbia (3), Harvard (4), Penn (5), Yale (6), and Navy (7).
Both the Princeton four and the four without coxswain won their respective heats and will race for gold Sunday as well. The four had one of the tightest races of the day, but it held off Yale by less than .2 of a second to win the second heat of the competition. Princeton will race at 9:22 against Yale, Columbia, Georgetown, Navy, and Harvard.
The four without coxswain won its heat by more than two seconds, and it will face Harvard, Penn, Navy, Columbia, and Cornell at 9:29 Sunday for IRA gold.
