10 Years Later, Caroline Lind '06 Reflects On Olympic Gold(s), Princeton Successes
August 17, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
Caroline Lind '06 was a world-class rower when she woke up on Aug. 17, 2008, just as she was the day before, and the day after. Nothing happened on that day that changed her ability as a rower.
She just happened to become an Olympic gold medalist that day.
Lind — the first Princeton woman to ever win Olympic gold, and only the second Princeton graduate (joining Herman Whilton '26) to win gold medals in multiple Olympiads — rowed in the 7 seat for a USA W8+ that defeated the Netherlands by nearly two full seconds to win the gold medal in Beijing. Four years later, she was back in the 7 seat for a USA boat that edged Canada (which included Princetonians Andreanne Morin '06 and Lauren Wilkinson '11) for a second straight Olympic gold in the London Games.
Lind was also the driving force for Princeton's first ever NCAA V8+ champion, a 2006 crew that stands with any boat that came before, or has come since. she was not the sole reason for success for a team that was written about on its own 10-year anniversary; Lind and Moran were two of the four future Olympians in that varsity eight, joining Kate Bertko '06 and Gevvie Stone '07. But Lind, a 2006 C. Otto von Kienbusch Award recipient as a top female senior student-athlete, was an absolute driving force.
How does she stand among elite rowers in history? This "all-time dream crew" article by worldrowing.com should give some perspective.
Lind and Princeton head coach Lori Dauphiny recently shared some memories on that Olympic final, as well as her 2012 run and her brilliant Princeton career; you can see that video by clicking the link above.
