Princeton Blanks Delaware 2-0
September 05, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Senior Sean McSherry had a goal and assisted on sophomore Gaby Paniagua's tally as Princeton blanked Delaware 2-0 in the Tigers first win of the season.
Â
It was the second consecutive game in which the Tigers handedly outshot the opponent, this time 14-5. Princeton had eight shots on goal, while Delaware managed just one.
Â
Junior Danny Hampton, who scored last weekend for the Tigers, had the first effort this evening when he put a free kick on frame in the 11th minute. Six minutes later Paniagua sent a through ball ahead for McSherry but the ball was knocked away by the keeper and out for a corner. McSherry had another chance after the ball pinballed around in the box after freshman Ryan Clare stripped a defender of the ball in the box. Bryan Prudil got a chance when the keeper played a ball to his feet on the right flank and it kicked it right back at him in the 39th. The best chance of the half however came from freshman Moulay Hamza Kanzi Belghiti in the 40th, when he collected a pass from Hampton on the right side and sent a hard shot in on Todd Martin and it bounced off his gloves.
Â
The Tigers kept up the offensive chances in the first and continued to limit the Blue Hens from getting anything going offensively.
Â
Kanzi Belghiti brought the team closer when he skimmed the cross bar in the 55th.
Â
It was the strong defensive play of Paniagua that led to McSherry's goal. As the goalkeeper attempted a goal kick, Paniagua came in from the sideline and broke up the pass nudging the ball into the middle for McSherry. McSherry deked two defenders while burying his first of the season in the lower left corner.
Â
The duo teamed up again in the 89th minute when McSherry split four defenders and found Paniagua at the top of the box. He took a few steps in and then blasted it into the right side.
Â
Junior Jacob Schachner earned his fifth career shutout with one save.
Â
Princeton (1-2) hosts Monmouth in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. Admission is free.
