CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Princeton University men's soccer team earned its third-consecutive victory Saturday afternoon when it took down Harvard University 2-0 in an Ivy League matchup at Jordan Field.
Senior Benjamin Martin and freshman Daniel Diaz Bonilla each scored their third goals of the season for Princeton. Junior Frankie DeRosa and sophomore Ryan Clare both had assists while senior goalkeeper Jacob Schachner recorded a clean sheet with two saves.
Princeton also had a 12-5 advantage in shots along with a 9-1 in advantage in corners over the Crimson.
The Tigers' offense was running smoothly as it tallied three shots inside the first 20 minutes, starting with senior Danny Hampton's shot that missed wide in the fifth minute. DeRosa had a shot blocked in the ninth minute and freshman Walker Gillespie sent a header wide in the 17th minute.
Schachner made key saves in the 20th and 30th minutes before Diaz Bonilla gave Princeton the lead in the 37th minute. He shot past Harvard's goalkeeper from the corner of the box on the far side after receiving an assist from DeRosa, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Despite a pair of early shots by Diaz Bonilla and Martin, the second half was largely played to a stalemate early. Gillespie sent a header just high of the crossbar in the 62nd minute, but in the 81st minute Martin would score on a header off a cross by Clare to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
Diaz Bonilla almost made it a 3-0 final score, but his shot in the 87th minute was wide as the Tigers held on for the 2-0 victory.
