October 29, 2019 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's soccer team took a break from Ivy League play to make a statement on the national stage Tuesday night, outlasting No. 22 Virginia Tech 3-2 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in the first meeting between the two programs.
Along with its No. 22 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll, the Hokies' RPI also stands at No. 8. The win comes almost exactly one year since Princeton's most recent over a nationally-ranked opponent, as it defeated No. 22 Cornell University 2-0 on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Ithaca, New York.
Junior Richard Wolf, freshman Walker Gillespie and senior Danny Hampton scored for Princeton while senior Cole Morokhovich added an assist. Junior goalkeeper Jack Roberts tallied a career-high nine saves for the Tigers.
Despite sophomore Ryan Clare missing a shot high in the sixth minute of the match, it did not take long for Princeton to find the back of the net. Shortly after Clare's miss, Wolf would send a header past the Hokies' goalkeeper off an assist by Morokhovich to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
In the 15th minute the Tigers generated a trio of scoring opportunities; Walker had a shot blocked, junior Frankie DeRosa had a shot saved and senior Bobby Hickson sent a header wide.
Roberts would save a header in the 29th minute that kept Virginia Tech off the scoreboard but ten minutes later the Hokies were able to knot the match on a free kick, 1-1, which would be the score at the half.
The Hokies came out of halftime on the attack, but Roberts was able to make saves in the 49th and 51stminutes for Princeton. In the 52nd minute, Virginia Tech was able to sneak one past Roberts and take a 2-1 lead.
Roberts showed resilience in goal as he would save a header in the 57th minute then make another save in the 60th. Freshman Daniel Diaz Bonilla had a shot for the Tigers in the 62nd minute, but it missed wide. Walker would then cap off the Tigers' resilient stretch of play with a goal in the 67th minute, shooting from outside the box for his fifth goal of the season and tying the score 2-2.
Hampton would then give Princeton a 3-2 advantage with his fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 79th minute, firing the ball past Virginia Tech's goalkeeper to the top right.
The final stage of the match saw Roberts make a series of clutch saves that helped to prevent the Hokies from tying the score, first in the 80th minute then in 83rd and finally a diving save where his outstretched fingertips batted the ball away in the 88th. When play concluded the Tigers had managed to hold on for the victory, 3-2.
