Late Goals Send Princeton Past UMass, 2-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – In a gritty midweek battle, the Princeton men's soccer team shut out the UMass Minutemen in a 2-0 Tiger victory on Tuesday night.
Jack Jasinski broke through in the 80th minute, scoring the first goal of the game with his third of the season. Roka Tsunehara tallied his first career goal with just over a minute remaining to double the Tiger lead.
With the win, Princeton improves to 3-1 on the season, while UMass falls to 4-2-2.
"I think today was a really difficult game, and a game that put different demands on us than most that we play. We had to deal with a ton of very early, direct balls in the air, and if we won those, we had to deal with a team that's very good at pressing after they play the ball forward," said Head Coach Jim Barlow. "We struggled a little bit to get our footing in the first half, but we got through it without conceding. And then in the second half, we realized what the game was demanding, and that was winning a lot of balls in the air, trying to get in their end and put soccer plays together when we could. I thought our guys did a good job of responding to those challenges in the second half."
The Tigers came out pressing early, generating two good chances as Bardia Hormozi and Daniel Ittycheria sent balls towards the net that would go just wide in the fifth minute.
With the game settling in, UMass and Princeton entered an end-to-end battle, with each side pressing and counterattacking as they fought for a goal.
Princeton would continue to come up with good chances, including a nearly-missed header by Sam Vigilante and a sequence of sharp passes as the clock neared 45:00, but neither the Tigers nor the Minutemen were able to get on the board before half.
The tense game picked up again after the break; after a half that saw each side only make two shots on goal, the Minutemen and the Tigers were in a stalemate again as they defended each others' attacks.
In the 62nd minute, Jasinski had what was the Tigers' best chance of the game thus far, sending the ball just inches wide of the posts.
Again in the 78th as the Tigers continued pressing, a connection between Roka Tsunehara and Ittycheria looked like it might be the one, but the Massachusetts keeper Dean Linden came up with the save.
Staying warm through several stoppages, Princeton continued to fight for a goal. In the the 80th minute, Liam Beckwith sent a through ball down the field, threading the needle for Jasinski who rocketed the ball past Linden's hands and into the back of the net to put the Tigers up 1-0.
With the game opened up and momentum at their heels, the Tigers continued to press in the Minutemen's end.
As the clock ticked down with just over a minute remaining, Tsunehara would connect on a pass from Hormozi, driving the ball in and cutting around two Minutemen before chipping the ball in to double the Tiger lead.
After a close game and some late-game fireworks from defenders Jasinski and Tsunehara, Princeton would secure the win, 2-0.
